Campaign Contribution Data for you to ponder

Before I started parsing the data, I thought I would find something interesting.  Next, I’m going to study the PAC contributions.

Hopefully you’ll find more.  All I could come up with is:

  1. 3 of the 4 major candidates remaining raised 45% of the total contributions for all candidates (Dems and Repubs).
  2. The two major Democrat candidates raised 38% of the total contributions for all candidates.
  3. Mike Huckabee raised 1.5% of the total for all candidate – AND he is still in the running.

2007 Fund Raising Totals

Hillary Clinton         $118MM

Barack Obama        $103MM

John McCain            $40MM

Mike Huckabee         $9MM

In 2007, over $593MM was donated to the presidential candidates.

In 2007, 18 presidential candidates reported at least $1MM.  They accounted for $588MM of the $593MM.

Of the $588MM,  6 candidates account for $457MM.  Of the 6, only 3 are in the still in the race: Obama, Clinton, McCain.   Together, they raised $262MM in 2007. (ref: http://herndon1.sdrdc.com/cgi-bin/cancomsrs/)

In the 2004 Election, there were about 475,000 people that donated more than $200 to campaigns.   That’s about 0.1% of the US adult population.  They estimate there was over 2,000,000 ‘small’ donors in 2004.  (ref: http://www.ncl.org/publications/ncr/95-3/fulltext2.pdf)

Here’s 2007 from the FEC

$200 and Under $125,722,775
$200.01 – $499 $24,770,645
$500 – $999 $35,321,023
$1000 – $1999 $81,135,832
