I’m coming to grips with the unpleasant reality that McCain will probably be the Republican nominee. I will stand with Mike Huckabee as long as he is running. But, the likelihood of Mike withdrawing is increasing. There are reports that his staff is unsure of strategy after Texas.
Even if Mike managed an incredible upset and forced the brokered convention, it is unlikely that he would score even a VP slot. The cynic in me says the brokered convention is the sure way to end up with Romney on the ticket. As it stands, it looks like the media is selecting Bloomberg for VP – on either side.
McCain/Bloomberg. Whoopee! I think Bob Dole/Jack Kemp was more inspiring (thanks only to Jack Kemp).
It’s a bitter pill. But, one I may have to swallow. Aside from being able to start a war, the President’s most important responsibility is nominating Supreme Court Justices. This act will be GW Bush’s legacy. He selected two excellent justices. The next president will probably have the chance to select two more.
It’s not an easy task. Reagan nominated Judge Bork. Definitely a conservative, Bork was borked. And ultimately, we ended up with the ‘centrist’ Anthony Kennedy. Reagan was also responsible for Sandra Day O’Connor. GW’s picks are definitely conservative.
Obama or H.Clinton will not be nominating centrists like Kennedy and O’Connor. They will be nominating liberal judges like RB Ginsburg.
Filling the Supreme Court with conservative judges is a reason for Huckabee to stay in the race. It is also a reason for us to continue to support him. He will carry the message to the Party and the people. The message is that the constitution is important and that life comes before liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Regardless of who is nominated, we should all agree to protect the balance of the Supreme Court. Allowing Obama to win may be devastating.
To me that is an unacceptable option.
